The Ripple Effect
May 17-September 29 2025
Governors Island, NYC - Nolan Park, House 8B
The ripple effect of the carceral system extends far beyond incarceration itself. It shapes the lives of victims and the families left behind—children, parents, spouses, and partners—while also influencing broader systems like politics, where millions are disenfranchised due to felony convictions and policies often fail to address root causes. Its impact is also felt in unmet needs for mental health care, addiction treatment, and access to employment and housing.
At the individual level, incarceration can alter a person’s path in profound ways. Some find spirituality or creative expression through writing, painting, or music, while others are deeply harmed by the physical and psychological conditions they endure.
In 2025, Escaping Time explored The Ripple Effect, using visual art and writing to expand the narrative beyond a singular, simplified view of incarceration.

An ex-something
August 17-November 10 2024
Governors Island, NYC - Nolan Park, House 8B
Everyone is an ex-something. Yet for many who have experienced incarceration, the past is treated as permanent. Escaping Time challenges that narrative by centering artists whose work reflects growth, complexity, and change—because transformation is something we all deserve to be recognized for.
Visitors were encouraged to participate by writing in what they are an ex of. Responses ranged from “ex-wife” to “ex-people pleaser” and even “ex-straight person.” The goal was to blur the distinction between “criminals” and “civilians” by showing the shared humanity among everyone.
